Workers from the Mahan Slate Roofing Company of Springfield MA make repairs on the copper roof which protects the ombra (porch).

Repairs to the copper roof of the ombra (porch) of the landmark Mark Twain House are complete. The roof angle was reset to allow water to flow away from the house. Installation of new ice and water shields, linings, and flashing also strengthen the house’s protection from water damage.

This project has been partially funded by a grant from the 1772 Foundation in cooperation with the Connecticut Trust for Historic Preservation, along with support from the Renee B. Fisher Foundation Fund of The Community Foundation for Greater New Haven and the Day Family Foundation.  The museum is very grateful for this support and for our funders’ recognition of the importance of preserving this invaluable historic asset.
