THE MARK TWAIN HOUSE & MUSEUM ANNOUNCES NEW BOOK: A BEWITCHING PLACE
September 4, 2025, Hartford, CT — The Mark Twain House & Museum is pleased to announce the release of A Bewitching Place: The Story of the Mark Twain House in Hartford by historian Steve Courtney, available now for presale through the Museum Store.
This richly illustrated volume is the official guide to the landmark home where Samuel Clemens—better known as Mark Twain—lived with his family during his most productive years. With more than 150 color photographs, architectural drawings, and rare archival images, A Bewitching Place offers readers an intimate look at Twain’s Victorian home, its Gilded Age design, and the stories of the family who lived within its walls.

Courtney, a longtime Twain scholar and former staff member of the Museum, provides updated text including two new chapters that trace the House’s journey from a private residence to its restoration as a National Historic Landmark and vibrant cultural institution.
The book will be published by Globe Pequot in October 2025. Presale copies are available now through the Museum Store: https://marktwainhousestore.org/products/a-bewitching-place-the-story-of-the-mark-twain-house-in-hartford
