New York Times bestselling author, filmmaker, and actor discusses Who Needs Friends and the evolving meaning of male friendship

HARTFORD, Conn. (March 2, 2026) — The Mark Twain House & Museum will welcome New York Times bestselling author, filmmaker, and actor Andrew McCarthy for an evening program on Wednesday, April 15, 2026, at 7:00 p.m.

McCarthy will discuss his new book, Who Needs Friends, a personal and wide-ranging look at friendship, loneliness, and the relationships men build, or struggle to build, over time.

In Who Needs Friends, McCarthy sets out on a cross-country journey to reconnect with old friends and to better understand what changes as adulthood advances. Along the way, he speaks with men across the country about how they form bonds, what they value, and what often gets lost in the pace of modern life. McCarthy writes, “It turns out that guys have a difficult time with friendship.”

Books will be available for purchase online and in the Museum Store.
