Author of the anticipated new book This Land Is Your Land will bring a sweeping, timely conversation about American history to Hartford

Hartford, Conn. (April 23, 2026) — The Mark Twain House & Museum will welcome Pulitzer Prize-winning historian Beverly Gage on Tuesday, May 26, 2026, at 7:00 p.m. for a conversation about her acclaimed new book, This Land Is Your Land: A Road Trip Through U.S. History.

A Yale historian and Pulitzer Prize-winning author of G-Man: J. Edgar Hoover and the Making of the American Century, Gage takes readers on a journey through the places where Americans learn, debate, celebrate, and contest the nation’s past. Timed to the 250th anniversary of the nation’s founding, This Land Is Your Land examines the stories told at historic sites across the country and asks what those places reveal, and sometimes obscure, about American history.

Drawing on visits to hundreds of museums, monuments, battlefields, parks, and roadside attractions, Gage moves beyond the familiar landmarks of the American story to explore a fuller, more complicated national past. The result is an ambitious and accessible work that invites readers to think more deeply about the places that shape public memory.

“Beverly Gage is one of the country’s most thoughtful and compelling historians, and this book arrives at exactly the right moment,” said host and Assistant Curator at the Mark Twain House, Mallory Howard. “As Americans reflect on 250 years of history, her work encourages us to look closely at the places where that history lives and to ask harder, more meaningful questions about how the nation remembers itself.”

The event continues The Mark Twain House & Museum’s tradition of presenting leading voices in literature, history, and public life. Tickets are $15 for general admission and $40 for admission plus a copy of the book. Museum members receive a discount on the admission-plus-book ticket.
