Spamilton Creator Gerard Alessandrini Talks About His Broadway Parodies

Having Hamilton withdrawal? How about some Spamilton, the off-Broadway hit parody of the blockbuster musical?

But how do you spoof the biggest hit in decades — and some of the best and worst Broadway shows and stars from the past four decades? (Think Barbra Streisand, The Book of Mormon, and Beyoncé.)

Gerard Alessandrini, creator of Spamilton,  will talk about the art of parody,  the phenomenon of Hamilton, and his long-running  Forbidden Broadway revues in a 7 p.m. talk on Thursday, August 15, at The Mark Twain House & Museum, 351 Farmington Avenue in Hartford.

Alessandrini will be in conversation with Variety critic and Connecticut arts writer Frank Rizzo as part of the Mark Twain House’s A Little Harmless Fun series of lively on-stage talks. Previous chats featured Broadway animal trainer Bill Berloni (and dog Bowdie, star of Because of Winn Dixie), Come From Away producer Sue Frost, cookbook author Dorie Greenspan, and The Simpsons writer-producer Mike Reiss.

The nationwide tour of Spamilton, stops at West Hartford’s Playhouse on Park August 14 to September 8, presented in association with The Bushnell. There will be a drawing for a pair of Spamliton tickets for the August 30th performance at the event.

Read Frank Rizzo’s story in Hartford Magazine.

Rizzo has covered theater for four decades for The Hartford Courant, Variety, and The New York Times.  Read his work on his website Showriz.

A Little Harmless Fun tickets are $10.
