Tony Award-winning producer
Sue Frost will talk with arts writer
Frank Rizzo about the long journey of bringing the hit musical
Come From Away to Broadway.
The conversation, which takes place on Thursday, March 14, at 7 p.m. at The Mark Twain House & Museum, launches Rizzo’s new A Little Harmless Fun interview series.
The national tour of the musical, which has been playing to capacity crowds on Broadway for two years, runs April 30-May 5 at The Bushnell in Hartford.
Come From Away takes place on 9/11 and the days following, when 38 planes were ordered — for fear of further terrorist sky-borne attacks — to land in Gander, Newfoundland, Canada, population 11,000. The 6,700 bewildered passengers found a generous community that invited the thousands of plane-people into their homes and gave them comfort.
Frost will talk about developing a musical with an odd title, no stars, and a subject matter that that initially may seem challenging for a musical. Word-of-mouth and social media turned the under-the-radar show into an award-winning phenomenon.
