The Mark Twain House & Museum is looking forward to welcoming best-selling author Daniel Mason back to the museum to discuss his latest book Country People with Rand Richards Cooper. Country People centers on a year in the life of a family as they strike out into the unknown (aka Vermont), leaving all the comforts of home behind—a rollicking, lyrical novel from Pulitzer Prize finalist Daniel Mason, the bestselling author of North Woods and one of America’s greatest living writers.

Daniel Mason was born and raised in Northern California. He studied biology at Harvard, and medicine at the University of California, San Francisco. His first novel, The Piano Tuner, published in 2002, was a national bestseller and has since been published in 27 countries. His other works include A Far Country, The Winter Soldier, and A Registry of My Passage Upon Earth, and his writing has appeared in Harper’s Magazine and Lapham’s Quarterly. He lives in the San Francisco Bay Area.
Rand Richards Cooper is the author of two works of fiction, The Last to Go and Big As Life. His writing has appeared in The New Yorker, Harper’s, GQ, Esquire, The Atlantic, and many other magazines, and in Best American Short Stories. A longtime contributor to Bon Appétit and a former restaurant critic for the New York Times, Rand lives in Hartford with his family and has been a critic and essayist for Commonweal for over two decades. He runs the judging panel for the Mark Twain American Voice in Literature Award.
