Two events! Writing Workshop 4 pm – 7 pm ($75), Lecture 7:30 pm (FREE)

Steve Almond, author of nine books of fiction and nonfiction, including the New York Times bestsellers Candyfreak and Against Football and the newly published Bad Stories (a literary investigation of “what the hell just happened to our country”), presents a limited-enrollment writing workshop followed by a lecture/book talk and book sale and signing.

Three-hour workshop: How to Turn Your Obsession Into Prose (4 pm – 7 pm , $75)
All good writing-whether fiction or nonfiction-arises from a writer’s obsessions. In this intensive session, Almond will discuss how to explore our obsessions on the page, without falling prey to self-absorption or sentiment. The workshop will start by looking at the work of masters such as Joan Didion and George Saunders, and then generate some work in class by confessing to our own obsessions. Check your inhibitions at the door. $75 (includes ticket to lecture)

Lecture 7:30 pm (Free):

Almond will give a special-to-the-Twain-House talk about Mark Twain, current events, and how Almond imagines Twain would view today’s political culture.
