Sunday, August 20 at 1:00pm – THE RED DISK – A First Look at a New Operical
Don’t miss an opportunity to experience a first look at a brand new “operical” (a fusion of opera and musical) based on a little-known Mark Twain short story! In 1902, Harper’s Magazine published Death Disk, a heartbreaking short story based on a true historical account. Three miliary leaders face Oliver Cromwell’s firing squad for their role in a failed uprising. The twist: the decision of who lives and who dies lies in the hands of a young girl.
Composed by Maestro Richard Chiarappa, director of the West Hartford Symphony Orchestra, and a libretto by Michael Dunne, The Red Disk is a fascinating musical adaptation of this little-known Twain work. The performance, which features an ensemble from the WHSO and vocalists, will include narration and musical excerpts that highlight the tale’s themes of stringent military honor, childhood innocence, and political compassion.
FREE, but reservations are strongly encouraged. REGISTER HERE.
