The Mark Twain House is shown by guided tour only; each tour lasts 50-60 minutes. Each tour can accommodate a maximum of14 people; groups exceeding that number will be divided across multiple tour times. Each tour is led by a trained historic interpreter and encompasses all three floors of the historic home. When a group is not on their tour, they can explore the self-guided offerings in the Museum Center: special exhibits, a documentary film, gardens (seasonal), the Nook Cafe (seasonal), and the Mark Twain Store.
Reservations and group rates are not available on the holiday weekends of Memorial Day, Labor Day, Indigenous Peoples Day, Thanksgiving, and the week between Christmas and New Year’s Day, as well as certain blackout periods—submit a request below to learn more. Groups planning to eat lunch during their visit must reserve space to do so. See add-on experiences for details.
A note on accessibility: The Mark Twain House is a historic structure with 3 floors and several sets of stairs. There is no elevator in the historic home. The first floor of the house, which makes up about 30 minutes of the total 60-minute tour, is accessible for most mobility aids. There are folding chairs set out throughout the house for visitors that need to sit down or rest their legs during the tour. There are two sets of stairs going up and two coming down; all stairs inside The Mark Twain House have a railing on one side. Visitors that are unable or do not wish to climb the stairs are able to tour the first floor and exit before the tour visits the upper floors. For safety and security, no visitors are allowed to remain unaccompanied in the house. For those unable to visit the upper floors in person, we do have a virtual tour available on our website that allows viewers to “walk” through the rooms and see them in great detail. With advance notice, we are able to offer a guided viewing of this virtual tour in one of our accessible education spaces onsite to coincide with group tours at no additional cost. This must be scheduled minimum 7 days in advance.
Add more to your visit!
Need somewhere to eat?
All groups that would like to eat lunch onsite must reserve space to do so. Reserving lunch space adds a $5/person facilities fee that covers the set up and cleaning of the space. For the safety of the historic structure, we cannot allow hot lunch to be set up in our group lunch space (ex. Sterno cans, warming ovens).
The Mark Twain House & Museum does not currently provide catering services, but can strongly recommend Fire x Forge, a local restaurant with a mission.
Want to dive deeper into Mark Twain’s Life?
Arrange for your group to engage in one of our engaging and interactive programs. Delve into Mark Twain’s family, the city of Hartford in Twain’s time, the neighborhood of Nook Farm, and more—for a full list of offerings, visit our Outreach Programs page. Length of program and pricing may vary.
Want to bring history to life?
Schedule the Living History Experience. Your group will partake in General House Tours before reconvening in the historic Carriage Barn for a 30-minute presentation and Q&A with one of our Living History interpreters (costumed actors portraying a member of Mark Twain’s household, in character for the late 19th Century). Booking the Living History Experience adds a $5/person fee.
